Namibia Self-Drive Culture Tour – 14 Days

The adventure begins as soon as you touch the ground at Hosea Kutako International Airport. Our friendly shuttle driver will be waiting for you at the arrival gates. Catch your first glimpses of Windhoek through the car window as we transport you directly to the car hire depot, for vehicle collection. You then head to the hotel to freshen up and unwind.

Today the road takes you to the oldest desert in the world. After breakfast head out and stock up on some water and supplies. The next two nights will have you camping, inside the park. This makes it very convenient to visit the Vlei at sunrise or sunset. You will be spending the next two nights in the vast and glorious Sossusvlei area. A salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert and in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia.

The Namib consumes a large part of southern Africa. According to the broadest definition, the Namib stretches for more than 2 000 kilometres (1 200 miles) along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa, extending southward from the Carunjamba River in Angola, through Namibia and to the Olifants River in Western Cape, South Africa. Sossusvlei is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia. Expect to be amazed as you witness the sun-rise and sun-set over the towering red sand dunes. Rise early to witness the colours change over the dunes, and take in the beauty of this majestic piece of nature.

Today you are heading to the quaint and small coastal town of Swakopmund. (German for “Mouth of the Swakop”) Passing through Solitaire en-route, which is known in The Netherlands because of the book of the same name, by Dutch author Ton van der Lee, telling about his stay in this place. It is located in central Namibia near the Namib-Naukluft National Park and currently hosts the only cafe, gasoline station and bakery. There is also a small general dealer, the only one between the dunes at Sossusvlei and the coast at Walvis Bay, as well as all the way to the capital of Windhoek.

Swakopmund is the adventure capital of Namibia. Young and old can find; and we can plan, the perfect day excursion or activities, in and around town.

Get an early start, as you will be heading to Damaraland today. There is much to see and do in the Twyfelfontein area.

Leaving Madisa behind you, make your way further north-west to Khowarib Lodge which is set on the limits of Kaokoland.

Before leaving Khowarib Lodge you will join a guided excursion to a local Himba Village. An early morning visit will coincide with the men driving livestock herds into the bush. Meanwhile, women and children will engage in day to day activities. Admire the distinctive skin colouring of the women. Your guide will explain the history of the Himba on the way.

Today you will head back on the C35 District Road and make your way to Etosha National Park. Staying inside the park means you can self-drive your game drives. Alternatively, pre-book guided game drives at extra cost, are available from all lodges in the area.

Spend the full day game-driving inside the park. Stopover at the different watering holes and observe the sometimes large number of different animals quenching their thirst. If you are lucky, you get to see and snap a photo of the endangered white or black rhinoceros. Watch herds of springbok antelope, along with zebras, wild dogs, buffalo, giraffes, elephants and lions, to name just a few, of thousands of different species of animals, not to mention birds and insects, that roam this part of Namibia.

Another Namibian wildlife gem is Erindi Private Game Reserve. Old Traders Lodge is set on Erindi Private Game Reserve, a stunning 71,000 ha wildlife wilderness. Many rare and endangered species are conserved here, notably lion, leopard and cheetah at times missed on a shorter stay to Namibia’s number 1 tourist destination. Black rhino and the rare African Wild Dog thrive in Erindi’s safe surroundings.

Make sure to pre-book any of their guided excursions and game drives to avoid disappointment.

Today you will drive back to Windhoek and return the rental vehicle to the depot no later than 16H00. You will be transferred to your hotel.
